Joining the Shed
The Crom-Shed is a small team doing ambitious work. We are always looking for people who want to build a career in nature recovery, community ecology and Highland conservation. From PhDs to school-leavers, there is usually a way in.
Working at the Crom-Shed means working in the Cromarty Firth catchment itself, on rivers, woodland, peatland and saltmarsh that we plan to tend for a hundred years. Roles range from funded research placements to skills-based trustee positions, with practical conservation, community engagement and science communication in between.
New openings are posted here as they come up. Keep an eye on this space, or sign up to our newsletter to receive the latest information.
A career in the catchment
The Crom-Shed is based in Dingwall, Ross-shire, with project work spread across the Cromarty Firth catchment, from the Firth itself to the upland headwaters and beyond. We are a SCIO with a small core team and a growing network of field staff, volunteers and academic partners.
We take career development seriously. Whether you are a student looking for field experience, a professional seeking a skills-based trustee role, or someone thinking about a career change toward the environment sector, we are an open door. Most roles involve being outdoors in some of the most beautiful river country in the Highlands.
We are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we work in, and we actively welcome applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in the environmental sector.
Career Pathways
We think about career development in three ways, and none of them require a formal job opening to start.
Placements
We host university and postgraduate placements across ecology, environmental science, communications and land management. Placements can be unpaid or funded depending on your institution's scheme.
Apprenticeships
We are establishing a relationship with landowners and educational institutions for rural, land-based apprenticeships. If you are a school leaver interested in a hands-on career in river management, ecology or conservation, talk to us early and we can help guide you through the options.
Volunteering
Consistent, skilled volunteering is a genuine route into an organisation, and we will always tell you honestly if a pathway is opening up. Learn with us, our partners and landowners to pick up new rural based skills, develop your career, or find a new hobby.
