How the Crom-Shed came to be
From a conversation on the banks of the River Orrin to a catchment-wide programme of work. A story of patience, place and people.
Read our storyWe are a collection of researchers, interested individuals, keen volunteers and friendly faces, working to boost local biodiversity, support nature and help our communities, one project at a time.
We are the Cromarty Firth Watershed Environmental Trust, a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation accountable to the communities who live and work inside the watershed.
We show up in wellies, build leaky dams, fill bin bags with litter collected at the beach, share cups of coffee with landowners whilst helping them become climate resilient, and plant native trees on cold March mornings. The catchment changes slowly, and so do we, learning as we go, measuring carefully, and sharing what we find.
Read our storyEvery project the Crom-Shed carries out draws on these six strands of work. Together they add up to a hundred-year ambition for the Cromarty Firth Watershed.
Native woodland, peatland, saltmarsh and wetland restoration at landscape scale. Working with the land and the people who live on it to create a resilient landscape and the Firth edge.
Landowners, crofters, farmers and the wider Highland community. Every project is a conversation. Long-term change needs local ownership and local knowledge.
Writers, musicians and makers in residence along the catchment. 'Crom Crumbs' gathers the stories, field notes and recordings that help hold onto our history and appreciate our rich culture.
Wood Sorrel, Atlantic Salmon, Sphagnum mosses and Curlews. We monitor the indicator species that tell us whether the Watershed is thriving, or work to bring them back.
Freshwater and marine. We focus on creating riparian habitats, reconnecting rivers, building wetlands and using nature-based solutions to work with our catchment.
School field trips to local estates, walks and talks, green prescribing and educational initiatives. We bring the watershed to people, and people to the watershed.
Three doors into the same landscape. Come in wherever feels right.
