Junior Angling
Getting Highland schoolchildren out of the classroom and onto the shoreline, the riverbank and the bog to discover the living catchment on their doorstep.
What we are doing
Catchment in the Classroom brings primary and secondary classes from around the catchment, from Tain to Cromarty, out into the field alongside our conservation team. Children growing up around the Cromarty Firth live beside one of Scotland's richest wildlife landscapes, yet many have never stood on the saltmarsh at low tide, watched ospreys fish the firth, or held a salmon fry in a survey net. Here, pupils get to participate in rural practices and bring their findings back into curriculum work across science, geography and art. Each visit is built around hands in the water and feet on the ground.
Why it matters
This is the hundred-year horizon made real. The children we take onto the firth today are the trustees, volunteers and decision-makers who will carry this work forward long after us. Giving them a felt, first-hand connection to their own catchment, and the confidence that they have a part to play in its future, is the most important long-term investment the Crom-Shed can make.
