Restoration Forest, Dalmore
Creating a restoration forest of resilient Ash and Elm trees to bolster local populations against pests and disease.
What we are doing
Using low-ground-pressure machinery and hand crews, we are blocking historic drainage ditches with peat dams, reprofiling the steep eroding faces of the hags, and re-vegetating bare peat with sphagnum and cottongrass harvested locally. As the water table rises back towards the surface, the living bog-building plants return and the peat begins to grow again rather than wash away.
Why it matters
Healthy peatland is the single most powerful piece of natural infrastructure in the catchment. It stores vast amounts of carbon, slows and cleans the water that feeds the rivers below, and supports a specialised community of wading birds, bog plants and invertebrates found nowhere else. Re-wetting Strathconon's bog is climate action and water management and habitat restoration, all in the same square metre.
